诗中描述了一位女子，单纯天真，只愿与“我”长相厮守。“我们”一起快乐生活的美好情景，令人嫉妒。可是后来，美丽的“她”随风而逝。一切都不重要，因为“我们”的灵魂永远在一起，梦中的“她”，双眸明亮，再长的夜晚，也有“她”相伴。就算是在坟墓中，“我”也心甘情愿。本诗情节鲜明，引人入胜。

阿尔弗莱德?丁尼生Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892)，英国维多利亚时代最走红的大诗人。丁尼生继承浪漫派诗人华兹华斯、拜伦和济慈的传统，同时受到古希腊、罗马文学的影响。他早期的诗作清新、生动，富于想象力。著名诗篇《尤利西斯》描述年老的尤利西斯追求新境界的永不止息的精神。1833年他的挚友早逝，他经过17年的构思，写成组诗《悼念》表示纪念。这个组诗被认为是英国文学中最优秀的哀歌之一，给作者带来极大的声誉。维多利亚女王因而与他结交，并封他为宫廷桂冠诗人。
泪水，无端地流，我不知道为了什么，
从某种神圣而绝望的深渊，
泪水涌上心头，汇聚眼中
注视着那秋天幸福的原野，
思索着那一去不返的时光。
像洒在船帆上的第一缕阳光那般清新明亮，
从幽冥中带回我们的亲朋，
像铺在船帆上最后一抹残阳那般忧郁悲伤，
带着我们所有的爱沉入天际
如此悲伤，如此清新，那一去不返的时光。
啊，夏日里幽暗的黎明，那么哀伤，那么陌生，
睡眼朦胧的鸟儿，将最早的歌声
